 Romantic Comedies

GENRE- romantic comedies or otherwise known as “romcoms” are lighthearted films that showcase the meaning of true love and on top of that they have the comedy factor involved which also makes them more entertaining. They are mostly targeted to a female audience between the ages of 12-25 because women tend to be more expressive about their feelings and they follow the girl’s journey instead of the guy. In addition, since these types of movies have grand gestures involved it attracts more woman. Moreover, women want an exciting love life and they get one by watching these romantic comedies. 

CONTENT- Most romcoms have the same content in different ways. They have an introduction which is where the two characters are introduced in the film. These two characters can be complete opposites in which showcase those opposites attract. Then the meeting moment which is often called a “meet cute” this is usually a meeting in an unconventional way; this is an essential factor in these types of movies. Then the couple falls in love, which is mostly shown by the couple going on different dates and enjoying each other’s company. Then the turning point happens which is the obstacle that the couple goes through, each of them must overcome their own problem in order to be together. Which is when the breakup happens, in every rom com there is a breakup in which the couple spends some time apart to grow and then they find each other again and they end up happily every after, usually the guy does the grand gesture to get the girl back. This content is used to showcase that what matters is the journey of falling in love.

TECHNIQUES-

The directors and editors of romantic comedies use a few techniques to make this production like they are. For starters, the main characters need a reason to find love which they use as an opening scene often. Also, they need to introduce the love interest early on, so the audience is interested early on. Moreover, the main character needs a best friend or a sidekick which is mostly the comedic sense of the movie. They also need to use dialogues, scenes and characters arcs that are sweet and slightly over dramatic because that is what rom com is all about. During the meet cute the director needs to be able to showcase how the sparks fly between the two characters or the chemistry between them. They also use high key lighting to demonstrate the character in their best way possible since the characters are good looking in these movies. The narrative is based on a “will they or wont they” which catches the audience attention because they don’t know if they’ll end up together or not. The production needs to have the perfect balance between romance and comedy because directors will soot the scenes with different variations to allows the editors to balance the movie out. 

MARKETING-

For marketing purposes they used most of the same actors and actresses that have a big rom com portfolio because they know that if those certain actors are in those productions the movie will be good. Also, the poster are mostly the same, they are all very attractive and sweet which attracts the eye of women. 

SHE IS ALL THAT- she’s all that follows the characters of Zack and Laney. Zach is the typical jock popular guy in High school with the cutest girl from the school which happens to be the most popular. Laney is the complete opposite, she’s an introvert who likes art and has one friend. This follows the pattern of the introduction; they introduce both characters who are complete opposites and in no way, you would see them together, but both are introduced in the very beginning. Later, on Zacks’s girlfriend break up with him and he makes a bet with his friends that he can transform any girl so she can win prom queen while they are talking about this Laney trips and all her things fall in which they make eye contact, and his friends decide that she is the one Zack is going to try and change which is considered the meet cute in the movie. Later, Zack takes her on different dates and while it took him long since Laney wouldn’t go with him. They start liking each other but he starts acting weird and ghosting her as he does this, she starts talking to Zack’s best friend which classifies as the “break-up” of the movie or the

obstacle they have overcome to be together. Is the time of prom and Zack and Laney are still not talking since she found out that Zack was doing it for a bet which causes her to have negative feelings towards him. She ends up not wanting to go to the Prom, but her dad talks to her to have fun and be more outgoing and she ends ups going to the Prom with Zack’s best friend. While they are at the prom Zack’s best friend is in the bathroom showing off how he is going to take Laney’s virginity, but little does he know that Laney’s best friend was listening to the whole thing, and he tries to warn Zack about it. He leaves to find Laney everywhere and he ends up at her house in which she gets there after him they go to her backyard and they talked and they end up kissing, happily ever after. 

LITTLE ITALY- This film is about Nikki Angioli and Leo Campo who grew up together in the same little Italian town. As kids they were best friends, doing everything together and always running around, their families were also incredibly close, however, when as adults they don’t treat each other, she leaves for London to study culinary school and she doesn’t go back to her town in five years. During this time Leo’s family and Nikki’s are enemies, they have a constant battle between both families, and they compete with their restaurants and constantly pranking each other. When she is forced to go back home, she reconnects with Leo in secret because if their parents find out about it, they won’t approve. He takes her on a date to go around doing all the things they did as kids and that is when they realize that they have feelings for each other. Their parents make them compete in the town annual pizza competition and that is when she is has a wake-up moment and realizes that nothing in her town is going to change so she decided to let him win so she can go back to London. When he is getting the trophy, she gets into a cab to go to the airport in which Leo and their families follow her and run all over the airport to find her when they do he confesses his love for her and they end up together, happy ever after.
